Grandma’s Granola

It’s been almost 6 years since I first heard the term ‘Crunchy Mom’.  It was in a question in a mom group.

“Are you a crunchy or silky mom?”

I had no clue what either one was.  I was just a mom trying to make it through sleepless nights with one child (little did I know what 3 that didn’t sleep great would be like!).  Shortly after, I also heard the term ‘Granola Mama’.  And a few years later, That Crunch was born.  😉

So, here is the most cliche post ever!  Granola… on That Crunch…

Imagine cold cereal that tastes like grandma’s kitchen…

Cinnamon wafting to your nose…

A sweet wholesome smell…

That’s what we eat in our home on a regular basis. We buy cold cereal and I cringe every time. First because we don’t buy the cheap sugar laden yuck. We buy expensive ‘good for you’, if you can call cold cereal that, cereal. And second, because I feel like I’m failing my family by purchasing cold cereal. AND, it doesn’t fill them up! That’s right, even the good kind still goes right through them and they’re ‘STARVING” 30 minutes later.

So… when I manage my time right, and plan… We make granola. Really, it is super easy. Anyone can do it. And, when you buy your ingredients in bulk like we do, it is cheaper than store bought cereal!

Ready?

Preheat your oven to 300*.

In a sauce pan melt ½ cup of butter, ½ cup of honey, and ½ tsp of cinnamon.

In a mixer, we use a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, mix together 4 Cups of rolled oats (not quick. Good old fashioned rolled oats.), ¼ Cup of Flax meal, ¼ cup sunflower seeds, and a chopped nut of some kind. We’ve used almonds, walnuts, or cashews.

Add the melted butter mixture. It smells SOOO good. If you have company coming and want it to smell nice, just throw this on the stove. Viola! It smells like you’ve been baking up a storm all day long.

Stir all ingredients well. I let my mixer run 3-5 minutes. You want the butter mix well incorporated.

Put in a 9×13 pan and bake for 1 hour at 300*. Open the oven and stir every 15 minutes. DON’T skip this step. If you do, you’ll have burnt granola on top and not cooked underneath.

We almost always double this recipe and cook for 1.5 hours.   This means you don’t have to make it as often!

Ingredients

1/2 Cup Butter
1/2 Cup Honey
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
4 Cups Rolled Oats
1/4 Cup Flax Seed Meal
1/4 Cup Sunflower Seeds
1/2 Cup Nuts
1 Cup Dried Fruit (optional: Craisens, raisins, cherries, etc)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300*.
  2. In a sauce pan, melt together Butter, Honey, and Cinnamon.
  3. In stand mixer combine dry ingredients: Oats, Flax Seed Meal, Sunflower Seeds Chopped Nuts.  (leave the dried fruit out
  4. Add wet ingredients to stand mixer and mix for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Spread mixture in a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  6. Bake for 1 hour at 300*.
  7. Use a wooden spoon to stir every 15 minutes.  Set a timer so you don’t burn your beautiful granola!
  8. Remove from oven and let cool 2-4 hours.
  9. Add dried fruit if you’re using.
  10. Enjoy!
